The present watch is a Rolex Ref. 3646 Type B from 1941/42 made for the Regia Marina (Italian Royal Navy) and featuring a first generation aluminium sandwich dial made by the Italian company G. Panerai & Figlio. A late Rolex Panerai 3646 with a very peculiar detail will be featured at Sotheby’s autumn auction Important Watches in Hong Kong which will take place on Oct. 8, 2019. The watch in question belongs to the very last batch of diving watches that were sent to Panerai in Florence before the end of WW2 (World War 2). A never-before-seen, almost 80 years old Rolex Panerai 3646 with sought-after Einsatzgruppe Keller – Kampfschwimmer engravings has surfaced at the German auction house Kastern GmbH & Co KG in Hannover.
Panerai. Ref. 3646, Type B Radiomir, used by a British Naval officer during the Second World War. Dial: black “sandwich”. Calibre: Rolex cal. 618, manual winding, 17 jewels. Case: stainless steel, screw-down back. Case number: 1,010,050. Closure: Boar skin strap with Pin buckle.The Panerai PAM01346 watch, “Guido Panerai & Figlio”, inspired by the historic Ref. “Modified” 3646, represents a unique, original and one-off opportunity for those who will be able to see, through its powerful historical character and values, a true testimony to the history of underwater watchmaking, which is so exclusively interpreted . This Rolex-Panerai 3646 Type E (serial 260934) was produced around 1944. Its case is 47mm wide and made from stainless steel. Within it, sits the Rolex- Cortebert 618/Type 1 Mod. Perhaps most intriguingly, the watch features a Rolex, error-proof “California” dial with radium markers. Captured the blue color of the steel hands on Ref. 3646 watches. Always an amazing detail on these watches: the matte black sandwich dial, the aged luminous material in a color range from honey-like orange to a deep red.
Panerai developed the reference 3646 in collaboration with Rolex for the Royal Italian Navy, in particular for their Frogmen who needed a reliable and legible watch in the extreme conditions endured during long and deep water diving.
