From the eye-catching and well-executed dial design to the inclusion of a proper (and specially finished) Moonwatch movement, the Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 8 Dark Side Of The Moon is an interesting blend of old and new Omega that comes together with a specific charm and appeal.
The new movement presents a new display ethos overall where the front side – the dial side – is inspired by the view of the Moon from Earth, and the back side is the dark side (of the Moon). This new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 ref. 310.92.44.50.01.001 uses the new caliber 3869. It is based on the caliber 3861 but features a representation of the lunar surface made through laser ablation.
Omega is now honouring this special moment with a new edition of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, which was first released in 2018 for the 50th anniversary of the mission. With its laser-engraved movement, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is even more interesting than ever. The laser ablation process makes this movement very special, but it is still the good old 1968 base hand-wound movement from the Moonwatch, of course. In my opinion, the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 is the best edition of the Dark Side of the Moon series, especially for those who have a weak spot for the Moonwatch. Omega's new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon (2024) chronograph pays tribute to NASA's historic Apollo 8 mission through laser-engraved details that incorporate the lunar surface, launch vehicle and words spoken from lunar orbit as part of its design. Equipped with OM factory's exclusive re-engraved 9300 movement, the function is the same as the original version, and the appearance is highly restored.
